Blood’s Veil | Chapter Ten Preview
She stopped cold—her mouth suddenly dry; her heart pounding double-time and extra loud against the walls of her chest.
Hank’s low voice sliced the air; his dark eyes cut right through her.
Goosebumps erupted on her flesh as his gaze swept over her from head to toe and back again, until his eyes locked with hers. She tried to break eye contact, but the nightmarish sight of him before her sent her body into lock-down. She swallowed, trying to wet the back of her throat.
‘How are you, Brooke?’ Hank shut the door of his own room with a resounding click and stepped out further onto the landing.
She instinctively took a shaky step backwards, her heart thundering, and her mind blank.
‘Aren’t you happy to see me?’ Hank prompted.
Brooke couldn’t speak.
Hank stepped closer.
‘Look at you,’ he said. ‘All grown up.’ The last three words stretched snake-like in the small gap between them. He reached for her, and Brooke recoiled, but he kept on, undeterred, his fingers grazing the side of her face. He tucked a stray curl behind her ear.
‘You really have become quite stunning, Brooke.’ His hand lingered near her ear, his voice barely above a whisper.
Brooke stepped back yet again. The heel of her shoe collided with the bottom of the step, and she stumbled.
‘Dad? Is that you?’ There was the muffled sound of footsteps behind the door at the opposite end of the landing, and Ella came out of her room, just in time to see Brooke regaining her balance. Hank had backed away against the landing window with the speed and agility of a large cat.
